Designing a Functional + Beautiful Indian Kitchen...

Any home's kitchen is its beating heart, and Indians especially love their kitchens. It is a place to mingle, form bonds with family and friends, and relive happy experiences in addition to being a place to cook. As a result, meticulous planning and attention to detail are required when building the ideal Indian kitchen.


Here are some crucial factors to consider when constructing the ideal Indian kitchen:


Layout & Space Planning: The kitchen layout should be planned to optimise available space while also making it easy to move around and operate efficiently. An "L-shaped" kitchen design works well for an Indian kitchen since it offers lots of counter space and storage possibilities. Parallel kitchens are the next best option given the separation of prep and cooking space. To make cooking more convenient, the location of the stove and sink should also be taken into account, too far and its inconvenient, too close and you will spill water into your pan.



Storage: Storage is a key element in any Indian kitchen. With a variety of spices, lentils, and cooking utensils, it's important to have enough storage space to keep everything organized. To maximize space, you can incorporate built-in shelves, cabinets, and drawers, while also making use of vertical space with tall cabinets.


Lighting: Good lighting is the essence of any Indian kitchen as we rely a lot on visual cues to check if something is cooked well. Having enough illumination is crucial for cooking because there are so many different spices and ingredients. A well-lit kitchen also fosters a cosy and friendly atmosphere. To make a room bright and welcoming, you can use a variety of light sources, including under-cabinet lighting and overhead profile lighting that doesn't cast a strong shadow.



Materials and Finishes: Indian cooking can be very messy, with lots of spices and oils that tend to leave stains, so it's important to choose materials that are durable and easy to clean. Granite and quartz countertops are excellent choices for Indian kitchens because they are heat-resistant, stain-resistant, and simple to keep clean. Large Format tiles, for example, are excellent choices for flooring and dado back splash due to fewer grout joints that tend to collect oil and muck which make them simple to clean and maintain.


Appliances: Indian cooking frequently involves a variety of cooking appliances, such as batter (Wet Atta) Grinder, Flour Grinder (Gharghanti), Chakli and Sev Makers etc, along with modern toys such as Air Fryers, Ovens and Microwaves, Coffee Makers, Toasters etc. As a result, having assigned spaces for these can be greatly helpful, for example, having a pull out tray at the bottom of the kitchen for atta grinder can save you from a lot of back aches! A gas stove with multiple burners is a must-have for Indian kitchens, and so is a chimney to pull out the smelles and oil vapours, while not always practical or allowed, we strongly recommend the use of a ducted chimney over a filter driven option.
